This is a fabulous NE journal study that has also been referred in NY Times. I have always wondered how supposedly medication mismanagement impacts the cost of care. The issue with adverse interactions are very well documented. The impact to patients could be life threatening to say the least but the first time we have a handle on the cost impact to the healthcare system. In a typical Pareto analysis it seems that just 4 drugs are the biggest cause of hospitalization. The impact on the design of BlissCONNECT and the medication module that candidly right now is only a database table with very little intelligence on the interaction and management/reporting system. As of now nurses have full control over it. Physicians manage / prescribe and nurses follow orders. The issue with this is that the patient/primary caregiver is still not in control and looking after day-to-day activity. Most systems are like this so I would say that most often patients are not as much educated/involved in this process.

The study changes little to this behavior. Its important to know for the clinician but the impact and the preventive actions to be taken by the patient and primary caregiver themselves seems undecided yet.
